VETERINARY EXTERNSHIPS & RESIDENCY PROGRAM

VETERINARY EXTERNSHIPS

Animals In Motion offers a mentored externship program for veterinary students who have completed their second year of training and are interested in equine sports medicine, rehabilitation, and applied diagnostics. Externships are designed to provide meaningful clinical exposure within an active referral, sports medicine, and rehabilitation practice, while supporting students at their individual level of experience and confidence.

Externs participate in daily clinical activities through guided involvement, with responsibilities adjusted based on skill level and comfort. Emphasis is placed on observation, discussion, and progressive participation rather than performance, allowing students to build clinical reasoning in a supportive environment.

Clinical Exposure

Externs are exposed to a broad range of cases and workflows, including:

  • Lameness and performance evaluations

  • Sports medicine field work

  • Diagnostic imaging and interpretation

  • Integration of rehabilitation into clinical decision-making

Teaching is case-based and discussion-driven, with a focus on why decisions are made rather than simply what is done.

Program Structure

  • Eligibility: Veterinary students (post–second year)

  • Duration: 2–4 weeks

  • Housing available if requested

  • Format: Guided participation with progressive involvement

  • Mentorship: Direct oversight and teaching by Dr. Carrie Schlachter

SPORTS MEDICINE & REHABILITATION RESIDENCY

The Animals In Motion residency program is a non-traditional, mentorship-based training pathway in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation. Designed for veterinarians seeking deep clinical development outside of a conventional academic model, the program emphasizes long-term growth, diagnostic reasoning, and progressive responsibility within an active clinical setting.

This residency reflects Dr. Schlachter’s commitment to educating and mentoring young veterinarians through sustained clinical exposure, thoughtful case management, and ongoing dialogue rather than rigid timelines or checklists.

Program Overview

  • Focus: Equine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation

  • Duration: Approximately 4–6 years

  • Structure: Longitudinal, non-traditional residency model

  • Philosophy: Mentorship-driven, clinically immersive

Residents are integrated into both sports medicine and rehabilitation services, developing the ability to evaluate, manage, and follow cases over time.

Clinical Responsibility & Mentorship

Residents assume active case responsibility, with regular oversight and discussion in both sports medicine and rehabilitation contexts. Clinical autonomy develops gradually and intentionally, supported by consistent mentorship, case review, and reflective learning.

Training emphasizes:

  • Diagnostic reasoning and movement analysis

  • Integration of rehabilitation into sports medicine decision-making

  • Long-term case follow-up and outcome assessment

  • Development of clinical judgment rather than protocol reliance

Learning Environment

The residency is intentionally welcoming and supportive, designed for veterinarians who value mentorship, curiosity, and thoughtful clinical growth. Education occurs through daily case exposure, discussion, and collaboration rather than formal coursework alone.

NEXT OPENING will be the Fall of 2027
